Low voltage lighting is a service business not a commodity business. Lighting design relies on specialty luminaires to achieve unique effects. Low voltage lighting with its broad and deep armamentarium of diverse fixture and lamp types can provide these special effects in a way that 120v HID, fluorescent and incandescent lamps cannot. The precision and compact size of low voltage equipment serve the concept of "intentional" lighting i.e. lighting that is site and task specific, planned and designed to light only exactly what needs to be illuminated. General lighting is like weather; it is just there and you can't do anything about it. Specific lighting is like an event or a destination; you plan to go there. In another analogy, general lighting is like elevator music; specific lighting raises your spirits, sets the mood enhances the setting with background "music" of your choice. The forward edge of this business is in providing the appropriate lighting effects to accomplish the task at hand in a creative and energy efficient manner.

As for maintenance, any lighting design worthy that appellation requires as a condition of the design that all components are operating to achieve the intended effects. Lighting should not be the center of attention but it should be missed when it is absent.
