View Full Version : LED's plus Controllers

Since bulbs containing LED's have several diodes as light sources, wouldn't it seem likely that a controller interfaced with LED drivers would allow the designer/installer to have more control of lighting effects?

Except for reluctant clients and onerous site conditions the designer/installer has complete control of the lighting effects. It is the initial design and installation that creates the effects and the assumption (my assumption) is that the designer does not want the results to be manipulated to the detriment of the designer's intention.

In over 1300 completed projects I have had one client that wanted elaborate user controls to be part of the installation. At that time (the mid-80s) the most user friendly system was the Lutron Grafik Eye Series pre-set dimming modules, infra-red sensors and hand held remotes. A very complicated circuit separation pre-wire had an electrician on site for over a week and then took me three evenings to calibrate all of the pre-set scenes.

The control system almost doubled the cost of the installation and, as far as I could determine, was seldom used after the first few weeks. How often are elaborate light level control installations specificly demanded by the client at the initial meeting?

I know that some designer/installers present their proposals with elaborate user control systems as a key sales element. A good salesman can sell anything; a good designer prefers that the system always looks as it was intended. My experience is that user controls (other than on/off) merely allow the client to spoil the original design intention.

The word "intention" is used twice in this post. If the effects are not intentional they are accidental and they have no place in the design; if they are intentional whose intentions are being served?

For your general LED landscape lights there is no control because you are not using the RGB LED but a "White LED.” When you get into the RGB LED think Vegas they often times use a DMX controller to manipulate the effects and colors you see. Like Sitelights said, for your general user they will want to or need to control the way the LEDs look
